Fixed Gear Coffee – Cauberg opened its doors in August 2018. The philosophy of Fixed Gear Coffee is to bring the best of cycling and coffee together. In February 2020 we expanded with a 2nd shop located in the heart of Maastricht. It is the mission of the founders Brian Megens and Shivani Achrekar to create an all inclusive place wherein everybody, from non-cyclist to World Tour pro, feels welcome. Fixed Gear Coffee is a place where people come in, with or without their bike, to enjoy a cup of coffee with some homemade cake, to admire our bike collection, photography work, fix their bike, or to check out our latest arrivals of cycling apparel. For more info about our single origin specialty coffee, our homemade cakes, the brands that we have in store, or our rides & events check out the website but even better, drop by our place. We hope to welcome you very soon!

Coffee before Cycling is a way for us to express how we feel, see and experience the upcoming coffee & cycling culture. The foundation of Coffee before Cycling is being inclusive: everybody is welcome regardless of their level of bike riding, religion, ethnicity, or sexuality. Everyone finds their own balance between riding hard and making time for a coffee stop. Although the level difference in bike riding might be huge, we all can share a good cup of coffee together and our love for the bike. With Coffee before Cycling we host rides, events, and do collaborations with creatives and like minded brands. No matter what, always Coffee before Cycling!

When you come over for a coffee or cake, or to pick up some Coffee before Cycling or other cool swag, you’ll find some pretty special bikes, shirts and photos hanging on the walls. We’ve collected rare bikes from Paris-Roubaix winner John Degenkolb and World Champions Anna van de Breggen and Theo Bos as well as bikes from legendary teams Rabobank (1997-2012) and Cofidis (2001). Included in our vintage bike collection are RIH super course, Zieleman type special ’77, and Kirk Precision. Not to mention several Colnago Master Olympic Editions, We have something for every bike fanatic.
While you’re checking out the bikes, you’ll find some beautiful black and white photos from the Six Day Rotterdam 2018. These photos taken by Brian Megens were exhibited on the Rotterdam International Sports Film Festival 2018. The project was also nominated for the Zilveren Camera 2018 making the top 5 in the Sport Series category.
For someone born in the ’90s Brian already has quite some careers in sport on his CV. From international top youth darts player, to kickbokser, to pro cyclist. In 2011 Brian was part of the famous Dutch Continental Cycling Team Jo Piels, he transferred in 2012 to the internationally renowned Rabobank Continental Cycling Team. However, in the years that Brian should have made his move to a World-Tour team, a crisis hit the pro cycling world and Brian decided to replace his bike for study books. He came to Maastricht for his Bachelor and Master degree. During his studies Brian developed himself as a freelance photographer and he also rediscovered the love for the bike. For 2 years Brian travelled the world to race fixed gear criteriums for several brands which are currently also present in the shop. After getting his Master degree in Media Culture Brian decided that it was time for the next step in his career and combine his passion for cycling, coffee, and photography. At the bottom of the Cauberg the perfect spot was discovered and what started as an idea became reality in August 2018. Brian is responsible for the making sure that we only get the best cycling apparel and accessoires in our shop and to make sure we all look good on the photos.
Having lived on 4 continents, Asia, Africa, North-America, and Europe, Shivani is a true global citizen. She came to Maastricht for her Master degree in Public Policy at The United Nations University – Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute. As a graduate, Shivani worked for the Maastricht University designing and running online education programmes for PhD students around the world. But she needed a new challenge – a true traveller can never rest. After taking sometime of to travel and work with some NGOs in India, Shivani decided that Fixed Gear Coffee would be part of the next adventure. As someone who was always experimenting in the kitchen growing up, Shivani had a lot of fun creating the menu of cakes – taking inspiration from all her travels. At Fixed Gear Coffee she is responsible for all our delicious homemade cakes and of course she has her share in the specialty coffee. For the best Latte Art in the house you have to ask Shivani.
